New Firmware For Older Phones
So in reality, perhaps the performance will be similar. Only time will tell.
That's a shame. I was hoping I'd be able to get a deal on one from them, so I wouldn't have to take a loss selling my current N95. Sad news!
Hopefully we'll be able to get a BL-6F and drop it into existing N95s... think that's a possibility?
This is to make room for the fatter battery. Now, the battery in the Euro ones slips ever so slightly underneath this camera module, so it could be they had to raise the whole thing.
I was also told that they completely removed the shutter slider. I suppose it'll be just like the other N-series where you press and hold the camera button to activate it. I don't see a big issue with that, personally.
After that release, the question is to get the N95, or wait for the N9-next w/touchscreen fun...decsions decsions.
Beyond from the initial joy in knowing that Nokia is at least thinking about the high-end American market, I'm actually a bit worried about what this means for future product plans. Instead of releasing the 8GB N95 with tri-band HSDPA, they've decided to create a separate product line for the States. I'd be OK with that, but if the N95 is any indication the US versions will lag nearly a whole generation behind their European counterparts, which is a huge bummer.
Antoine made an interesting point and I'llsay that I think it may be correct.. having Nokia split off from the rest of their much larger global base to create a niche device for the North American market could be a catch 22.
I started using Nokia phones whilst overseas and I was always amazed at how far behind things were back stateside. Yes Sprint and Verizon are doing great things with their networks but its total tunnel vision for the customer, you never think about will my device work outside of our borders enabling a growing global economy with a seamless transition from airport to airport with out a hitch. The three year Nokia Display centers are now closing all over the states which leaves people from overseas that moved to the US or the smaller communities like this one (although growing) to make the devices known. I get "what carries has that phone" all the time here. SO frustrating! As if Verizon or whoever makes the device!! Either Nokia has to work with T-Mobile, Rogers, ATT etc to get their devices in peoples hands (fully working models.. with fully working firmware) accompanied by a massive marketing campaign with the all to familiar and equally tragic commercials showing how the "world phone will work in Paris" or things will simply remain the same. Moto and Samsung will lead the pack and the rest of us will wonder around measuring our height in centimeters and purchasing our milk in gallons aimlessly confused as to why we are disadvantged by wanting, and even having the newest technology that just wont work here but will in the 118 other GSM enabled countries!!!
;-)
How's Stevey gonna like the N95 with all the bugs sorted out sitting on the same network competing with the iPhone? (I use a mac so please no flames from the apple crowd)
A round of applause if Nokia and ATT can work it all out though.. could be the beginning of a resolution to the problem that I presented above.
And thanks to Darla and the rest for keeping us informed.
Cheers!
Iphone skin for the phone. now what?
I agree the iPhone will remain dominant, but thats because the majority of the users wouldn't know what to do with 80% of the features of the N95, remember it IS a smart phone and the apple is not.
We all win because this competitiveness spawns innovation.
Back to the topic of the US N95...
I don't delete or edit comments, but let's not let this great news reduce us to bantering idiots, arguing about devices that don't even compete for the same consumer. That's just daft.
(I'm not calling anyone who's commented an idiot, just saying that if we let this get down to the point where we're arguing about that, well, if the shoe fits.....)
So.. what do you think? N95i.. surely there is no N95-8gb model coming.. at least not stamped 8gb on the facia. That would be an odd label when the 16 and 32gb cards come out? (Yes it will support up to 32gb when they are released albeit a long time from now)
So.. is it real or not.. if so.. whats the name? I'd hate to have to deal with an SKU#'s firmware etc etc for the "same" device.
And yes, the 8GB model is still coming, as far as I know. However, I agree that one should be a different name, or an i or something, since it's drastically changing the interior. It's a hard drive, not just a bigger memory card.
So...it's real (I have proof coming), and the name is the N95. I'm sure it will have a technical designation such as N95-3 or something like that. The firmware, well, like I said, it'll be the same as the E70, for example.
I mean after fishing out all that money for a defective phone..they are putting salt on the wound by going along and releasing a far better phone in a different market!!

Once T-Mobile gets online with UMTS 1700, I think we could see Nokia find justification to pour additional funds into the US market as the two largest GSM carries will have consumers demanding HSDPA. We have to remember that WiMAX is already here in some fashion via Sprint so the GSM carriers can compete.
I really hope to see quad-band UMTS in the next 12-18 months. Qualcomm and Broadcom.. can't we all just get along ;-)
2. I don't recall retracting any rumors in the past. Please enlighten us.
This is a story about the N95, which is a smartphone and entirely different from the iphone, which is not a smartphone, is closed to third-party applications, and makes you go through the ridiculous routine of emailing stuff to yourself(over EDGE, let's not forget) if you want to save the file.
If "most consumers will choose the iphone", which is far from certain, then great for them. They wouldn't know what to do with a real smartphone anyways.
A redesign of the backcover to add a millimeter or 1.5 to the batterythickness looks like a great idea. I guess it will be available for the other N95 models too. For the heavy daily user it seems a good solution, but for the heavier roadwork I prefere a Li-Ion battpack that kan charge my phone 3x or more...
Also Why is Nokia calling this new N95, the N95. One would have thought it would be called the N95i!!
The differences are quite substantial to my knowledge, or are they trying to hide the fact that in reality, the N95 should have come with all these upgrades from day one!
EDGE.. I thought I would mention.. I am getting damn good speed on T-Mobile Edge.. apparently the N95 is a Class 32 Edge device (correct me if Im wrong) so.. depending on the load on your associated cell tower.. you can pull close to 300kbps on the device. Its faster than my E61i, N73, or E61 that I had previous to the N95. Its not 384k or 3.6mb but is plenty to have IM+, Roadsync, an IMAP connection, and a quick google search all at once. Its hell on the battery but I've been successful running all of the above in tandem without memory issues and with adequate speeds.
Again.. fingers crossed for a global device, Quad band GSM, Quad Band UMTS from Nokia with enough ram, a good battery, and a global warranty! Is that really too much to ask?
Later
Why not make it a TRUE WORLD PHONE and keep the HSDPA-2100 and just add the 850/1900 US freq's.
Then I would buy one.
In the mean time I will stick with my Treo 750 which is a true world phone.
the next model when T-mobile and Nokia get together in 1700/1900/2100 HSDPA goodness. Certain places have the "old" N95 for under $650.. oh well..
"Shutters manually" at the thought of having to use an old mobile.
;-)
But where is this pic from? (http://symbianguru.typepad.com/welcome/images/2007/08/09/usn95revised.png)
Not doubting anyone, but i can't find it!
On the nokiausa.com and nseries.com, it still shows the old specs!
=D
I have seen faulty sliders in the shop and came back! This new model wont come in anytime for the next 1 year here!
I have both (A & B) my phones registered to SIP server. VOIP works fine.
When I call the B from A through 3G , i am unable to locate video share option. It is not in the Options menu.
I have added the SIP uri as per the manual. On the same setup i am able to make video share using two 6680 but not through N95!!!.
Any Ideas??
Thanks for the help
